Chapter Eight
* Holly *
Trish called me Tuesday evening while I was taking my break at work. She usually waited for the weekends when she didn’t have class, so I knew something was up.
“Hey, bestie,” I said. “How’s life in the big city?”
“I’m on the downhill slide. Just have to make it through finals and then figure out what classes I want to take this summer. What’s up with you?”
“Same as always. Oh, but Willow got a date to the prom!”
“Are you serious?”
“Yeah. I think I’m more excited than she is, though,” I laughed.
I’d dreamed of prom during my junior and senior years, but at least one of us was going to get to go. When I offered to pay for her dress and shoes Willow got all sniffly on me, but I wasn’t going to let her back out over money. I’d find a way to make it up. This was her life, something that she’d remember forever and maybe take some of the awfulness away from her memories of high school. She deserved a taste of happiness.
But I worried that she was still off. Whatever had been bothering her hadn’t gone away, and she really wasn’t as excited as she should have been. Tegan and Lauren were pulling her along in the right direction, though.
“She must just be in shock or something,” Trish said.
“Probably. She’s been out looking at dresses with her friends Tegan and Lauren. Lauren’s going to do her hair and makeup. She’s been modeling for a few years, so she’s almost good enough at that stuff to be a pro.”
“Good. I’m glad she’s getting to go. And what about you?” she asked, her voice turning playful. “Any new handsome princes in your life?”
I snorted. “You worked here for two years. How many of those did you ever see hanging around the bookstore?” Aside from her father, of course.
“You’re not at the bookstore all the time.”
True, but when I wasn’t I was usually at Grant’s. “Trish…”
“What is it?”
I needed to tell her. But how could I? “Never mind.”
She was quiet for a minute. “Holly, are you mad at me?”
“What? No!”
“Okay. I just wondered. You hardly ever call me, and when we talk you act all weird.”
“I don’t… I don’t want to bother you.”
“Bother me?”
“Well, you’re in college and living on campus and making new friends and everything. I’m just here, doing the same old stuff. I don’t want to bother you while you’re having all these new experiences.”
“Holly, you big goof,” she sighed, then paused for a moment as though searching for the right words. “You know how you feel about Willow?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s how I feel about you. Can you imagine ever feeling bothered because she wanted to call and talk to you and just hear your voice?”
“No.” I already wished she’d talk to me more and confide in me again.
“You’re the sister I never got to have. We’ve held each other up through the worst things that life could throw at us. Just because I’m a few hours away now doesn’t change that.
